Lygon Street Carlton is a great center for all things Italian.  Pizza, Pasta, Gelato is the order of the day.  So many good value dining options.  But my pick is a double.  Start at Donninis for the lightest thin base pizza just like you get in Napoli.  Then some hand made pasta.  Donninis may not be the cheapest pizza & pasta in town, but I think it is the best.  Then wander down to Brunettis on Farady St, for divine cakes and coffee.  This is a great way to sample the best that Lygon street has to offer.
